In May 1869 Central Pacific’s ‘Jupiter’ and Union Pacific’s ‘No.119’ met nose-to-nose at Promontory Summit in Utah, completing the first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States. The ceremony known as the ‘wedding of the rails’ was held on May 10th and was witnessed by hundreds of railroad officials and track workers. It commenced with driving in three final spikes; a spike with a mix of gold, silver and iron, a silver spike, and the most famous, a gold spike.
