Meet the winner of the horsepower race: the GE AC6000CW with 6000 hp under the hood - thats more than the Big Boys were able to do. They are about 76 ft. long from coupler face to coupler face and are often run in pairs.

While these locomotives proved to be powerful, the Class 1's decided they were too powerful. A single unit failure was a much larger issue than with lower power locomotives. So while they were the most powerful locomotives, they met the same fate as the EMD SD90's, replacement with new lower power units.

Some of the AC6000's have been repowered with lower power prime movers, or came with lower horsepower units to start with, many of these remain in service today. Only a few of the AC6000 continue in service as originally delivered. Still, they represent the pinnacle of horsepower and make an impressive site on any layout. Now with operating smoke units, they will be even more so.
