As intermodal traffic continued to grow in the 1960's, the size of intermodal yards also grew. They need to move trailers, and later containers, around the yard for loading, storage and departure resulted in the development of purpose built diesel yard tractors. Introduced in 1968, they are much smaller than over the road trucks and can maneuver around the yard with ease and greater efficiency. Today, more than forty years after their introduction, these yard tractors continue to be a common site at intermodal yards across North America.
