Back by popular demand, we are re-running the Southern Pacific caboose #1. After testing the similar Missouri Pacific car, SP acquired this car to continue the testing and ultimately folded it into the regular fleet. It used a shorter, boxcar style, diagonal panel roof and freight car style coil springs in the trucks. At the time, it was already becoming clear that the caboose age was coming to a close and no further orders for this design were placed. Please note, we are running TWO paint scheme variations of the SAME ROAD NUMBER. The first is a re-run of the last run we did with “SOUTHERN PACIFIC” spelled out in a rectangle over the bay windows. The other is an alternate version featuring a large “SP” on the side in lieu of the full name. The car wore this paint scheme for a short time after its construction.
