Available On: April 1, 2020

The 1937 AAR boxcar is widely viewed as the first standard freight car type that was voluntarily adopted by the majority of railroads in North America. Previously, railroads used several USRA mandated car types.

These cars had many features that went on to become standard on future generations of boxcars. These include dreadnaught ends, straight panel roof and an inside length of 40’ 6”. They had an interior height of 10’ with a 3700 cubic foot capacity.

There were only a few variations of this car built. This made the car generally the same across different railroads, which showed the railroads how operating the same cars could simplify operations and lower operating costs. This has led to the continuing trend of multiple railroads using the same equipment.
