Coiled steel is basically steel sheeting that is rolled for ease of transport. It is used in manufacturing to make a wide range of products. As the range of items made with coiled steel has increased, the volume of this product shipped by rail has also increased.

Coiled steel had typically be carried in gondolas with special covers to protect the steel from weather. With the increasing use of coiled steel, a new car type was developed specifically for it. Starting in the 1960’s a lighter type of car was developed specifically for coiled steel transport. These new car designs feature one or more troughs for the coils to ride in and purpose built covers to protect the coiled steel from the weather.

This type of car quickly gained favor from the railroads and thousands of these cars in varying types have been built. Today, they are a common sight wherever steel is produced and products are manufactured with steel.
