PROTOTYPE HISTORY

In 1984, EMD unveiled the first four SD60 demonstrator units. The SD60 was equipped with a 3,800 horsepower, 16 cylinder, turbocharged 710 engine. Five years later, EMD began offering the SD60 with the “safety” wide nose cab, thus creating the SD60M. Union Pacific was the first to acquire the SD60M followed by Burlington Northern, Soo Line, and Conrail. Conrail also ordered SD60I “isolated cab” versions. BN’s SD60M’s went to BNSF while Conrail’s units were split between Norfolk Southern and CSX.

BN FEATURES:

BN acquired 100 SD60Ms between 1989 and 1991. Numbers 9200-9249 featured 3-piece windshields, while 9250-9299 had 2-piece windows. Our models represent as-delivered SD60Ms in 1990-91 with the 2-piece windshield.

Also returning for the first time since 2009 is BN 1991, the Desert Storm unit. The engine was specially decorated to commemorate troops involved in Desert Storm, as well as BN employees who had been called to military duty.

For the fist time ever, these SD60Ms models with Tsunami2 DCC+Sound are equipped with the unique BN strobe ditch lights. Unlike modern flashing ditch lights, the strobes flashed slightly out of sync with each other- an effect that will be accurately depicted on our model.
