Southern Pacific's final decade of independence, saw a new image in the form of the ''Speed Letter'' logo and a new commitment to intermodal traffic. This group of 48' containers exemplifies both of these trends. The inclusion of the traditional SP Sunset logo on the nose and rear door of these containers added a lot of class. The focus of SP's intermodal efforts was on the Sunset Route from Southern California to New Orleans, St. Louis (over Cotton Belt,) and Chicago (over Gateway Western.) Following the merger with UP and as equipment trusts expired, many of these containers went to CSX and other operators.
