Used in high-speed intermodal trains in the Midwest and West coast, UP’s SD40-2’s went through several mechanical upgrades throughout their service lives. The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000 horsepower, turbocharged locomotive with electronic control systems built from 1972 to 1989 with nearly 4,000 units produced. It was the best-selling EMD locomotive in history.
