Walthers Proto - HO Scale - 85 ft ACF Baggage Car - Union Pacific (UP) 1960s City Of Los Angeles #5657 - Yellow/Gray/Red (SKU 920-9540)

Available On: July 1, 2019

Travelers aboard the City of Los Angeles in the 1960's could enjoy the best of both worlds, whether relaxing in style aboard luxurious Pullman sleepers and lingering over dinner in the signature Dome-Diner or its lower level “Gold Room,” or taking advantage of lower priced coach fares and tasty meals served quickly in the Café-Lounge.

Walthers Proto brings you 10 limited edition cars to model this great train, and now there are two ways to customize your consists for operation or display. For the first time ever, individual cars with a factory printed name or number as appropriate are available from the 920-9540 series. Or model any car in the City of Los Angeles fleet with the standard cars from the 920-9530 series, which include decals with the full selection of names and numbers used on the prototypes.

The City of Los Angeles handled a large volume of storage mail during the winter months, often in newer baggage cars from the 5631-5663 series. Ordered from American Car & Foundry in 1953, these 85' streamliners were unique in that they rode on six-wheel trucks to handle a bigger load. All cars were built to plan #767570, but were constructed in two lots, with eight cars in Lot #3810 featuring nine roof vents, while the 25 cars built in lot #4094 had a single large vent. After 1967, most were reassigned to work train service.

Based on cars from lot #4094, these models are finished in UP's classic Armour Yellow, Harbor Mist Gray and red. Superb details inside and out include new black window gaskets for the first time, factory-installed grab irons, correct trucks, and modeler-installed extended drawbars for 22" radius curves. A full set of decal numbers is included to model any car in the fleet.

The 1960's City of Los Angeles saw an increase in head-end traffic during the winter months, handling checked baggage for coach passengers, as well as storage mail and express shipments. Based on cars delivered new in 1953 from American Car & Foundry (ACF), this Walthers Proto model is based on the 25 cars in the #5631-5633 series built as lot #4094, plan #767570 that rode on that rode on six-wheel trucks and featured a ingle large roof vent. Perfect for your UP Domeliner fleet, other features include

  • Prototypically accurate window tinting & black gaskets as appropriate
  • Factory installed stainless steel grab irons
  • Modeler installed extended drawbars for use on 22" radius curves included
  • Turned metal wheelsets and correct trucks with built-in electrical contacts
  • Fully assembled and finished in authentic colors
  • Proto MAX metal knuckle couplers

PLEASE NOTE: As these cars are the correct prototype length and feature full underbody detail to match the prototypes, a minimum 24" radius is recommended for operation.
