THE SUNSET OF CANADIAN NATIONAL STEAM

Renowned photographer Newton Rossiter captured this black and white footage on 16mm film during 1959 that included some of the last runs of steam in Ontario, Canada. We see some of the big 4-8-4s in both freight and passenger service, and includes a scene of one 4-8-4 number 6242 going on the turntable and into the roundhouse under steam for the very last time, before its fire was put out inside. We also see a nice 4-8-4 doubleheader, and two scenes of 4-6-4 Hudsons on passenger trains. We also get a scene of streamlined 4-8-4 number 6402, and the next to last commuter train to operate steam with 6219. The last steam ended in Ontario on April 21-22 1959. Then we move west to Manitoba in June of 1959 to see a variety of 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s, 2-8-2s, 4-6-2s, and various 4-8-2s including the semi-streamlined 6060 series in freight and passenger operations. Most footage here is shot between Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie which includes St. James Tower. The show concludes with a winter fantrip of 4-8-4 6167 in the winter operating in Ontario.

This show was originally produced by Rail Innovations and was never put on DVD until this release in 2013 by Greg Scholl Video Productions, the new owners. It's another fine Canadian show of steam action from a by-gone era preserved for your enjoyment.
