A LAST LOOK AT STEAM

This is a great show, although short in length is long on variety. It's fast paced with great footage of several U.S. railroads around the great lakes. First we see Nickel Plate Road, and the first engine is the now famous 2-8-4 number 765 in freight service. In this segment we see several 2-8-4s in freight service around Chicago and west of Buffalo.

In addition we see two of the neat 4-6-4 Hudsons. # 173 is seen at Chicago and Calumet roundhouse, while # 175 is seen in one fantrip clip in 1958 from Buffalo. Next we enjoy a few clips of seldom seen Duluth, Winnipeg, & Pacific in the Duluth area with ex-GTW 2-8-2 # 3425, and another engine which is a 2-8-0.

The next segment features a few shots of Grand Trunk Western with mostly 4-8-4s on freight and passenger runs, plus a couple of 4-6-2s on short passenger trains.   A neat meet is seen at Durand with #6315. Other 4-8-4s include # 6314, # 6321, and streamlined #6410.

Next we visit the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range with its 2-8-8-2 Yellowstones. As most of you know we are known for our two other programs on the DM&IR which you can see on this site as well. This has mostly ore trains 5 different engines spotted, plus another one, number 222 on a fan trip shot on July 5, 1958. This is a nice segment as well.

The final 1/3 of the show is CPR and CN fantrips in Ontario with things like the Canadian Pacific Rail 4-6-2 number # 2663 out of Montreal, and a neat trip with the 4-6-2 # 1271 doubleheading with the now famous Royal Hudson, number 2839 (this engine ran on the Southern Rwy in 1979-80). We also see a few clips of Royal Hudson #  2857 on what turned out to be its final run.

To wrap up the show we see several clips of Canadian National 4-8-4 number 6167, which was the engine that preceeded # 6218 and later # 6060.

With Newt Rossiter's fine narration, this another great show to enjoy. It is really fast-paced with all the variety, and 2/3 of it is shot in the USA.
