UNION PACIFIC IN THE 90S

This visit to Union Pacific territory was mainly from two visits in 1995 and 1999. In 1995 we explore a few scenes at Creston, Wyoming, the crest of the continental divide. Then the next day we get lucky and find out the last Centennial Number 6936 is on a freight from Denver to North Platte. We catch up to it around Point of Rocks and chase it on to North Platte. Along the way we see additional freight trains on a somewhat rainy day. We also got invited into the cab of the 6936 which was the middle unit for a look around inside. Next we see a train passing from inside the SD60M as the train is stopped for a meet. Along the way we also see a unit hopper train with red SD70 demonstrators as distributed power. This was a fun day seeing this one-of-a-kind and largest diesel in the world in action.

Next we are in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1999, to see a deadhead move of UP Steamers 3985 (Live in steam), hauling 844 (not in steam) and the support equipment for the steam program. They are returning from Sacramento after Railfair 1999, and a SD60 leads the train, so we keep with the theme of UP In The 90s for the diesel fan, but the steamers get this cameo look. We see some other UP freights along this route and we peal off near Green River.

The final segment is a 1999 visit to the hot spot of Gibbon, Nebraska. This is where the line from Cheyenne splits to go either to Omaha or Kansas City. We get there on a lovely July 5th morning and witness a variety of action, including a surprise visitor. In addition we see a lot of variety of motive power for SD40-2s on a rock train, to new power, and foreign power from other railroads. In this segment we were fortunate to get symbols and information for the majority of the trains we witness. It seemed like there was always a train coming or going during our visit.

Contemporary diesel and mainline railroading fans should enjoy this show.
