GATX Black Lease "Original 1948+" GATC 1948-design 8000 Gallon Welded Tank Car

While this car looks similar to our April release, the 1952-Design 8,000 gallon tank, it is not the same car.  While both cars are of welded, post-war construction, the difference is found with the dome area.  The 1948 car has platforms on the sides of the tank, the 1952 design has a platform with handrails that surrounds the dome.  The dome surround was a safety innovation required on new tank car builds in 1952.

Tangent Scale Models is proud to introduce our latest all-new freight car replica: The General American 1948-Design 8000 Gallon Welded General Service Tank Car! This all new model is the seventh (yes 7th) all-new General American tank car product in our ever-expanding tank car line. Our model exhibits market-leading design and tooling practices, geared toward consumers who desire the most accurate models with a “family-appearance” between prototype railcars manufactured by the same builder.

Following World War II, General American Transportation Company transitioned away from riveted construction techniques for tank cars produced at the company’s Sharon PA plant. In 1948 GATC first released “all-welded” tank and underframe designs of their general service, non-insulated tank cars. In many ways these cars looked similar to their pre-war predecessors, except that they were missing the many circumferential rivets that defined that production era. These tank cars remained in service into the 1980s, even without safety platforms, and were utilized for a variety of services including corn syrup, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), fatty acid, molasses, sodium chlorate, vinegar, fuel oil and other petroleum products, etc. These were very common tank cars, not oddballs!

The Tangent Scale Models General American 1948-Design 8,000 gallon welded general service tank car is a stunning model that includes distinctive details matched to each paint scheme, such as inlet and safety valve details on the tank dome, outlet pipes underneath the car, and heater pipe details. Also, note our correct “true-to-life” colors and “hyper-accurate” lettering including exact fonts and lettering placement. Finally, our scale replicas operate as well as they look, equipped with free-rolling all-metal wheels, NMRA-conforming weight, and Kadee® scale couplers, meaning our models are truly ready to run.

As usual, all of our offerings below feature photos on our website showing the actual production models and the prototype cars! Here are our schemes:

Lettered for Caustic Soda use from their production plant in Wilmington, CA, this sharp car is available in 4 numbers.
