Dear N Scale Customers:

Kato will make an N-scale model of electric locomotive EF65- 500 P Type Express Color operated after the transfer from JNR to JR. The locomotive was seen 1964 to 1965 pulling then star train of series 20 sleeper express trains as well as series KOKI 10000 high-speed freight trains on Tokaido mainline. The locomotive for passenger trains is called P Type, while that for freight trains is categorized F Type furnished with equipment, which is different between the two types. To make up for shortage of locomotives for passenger trains, eight locomotives of EF65-0 were converted and used to pull passenger trains. The scale model is based on the locomotive which was taken over by JR Freight after transfer to JR and was operated to draw various freight trains such as KU 5000, WAMU 80000, KOKI 104, etc.

At the end of JNR period, the car transport by KU 5000 was once suspended in March, 1984. Yet to meet the brisk demand for cars at home and overseas, transport of the cars made by Tochigi Factory of car manufacturer, Nissan, was resumed by train in March, 1985. Trains dedicated to car transport were operated from Usunomiya to Yokohama Honmoku (for exports) and to Chidoricho (for domestic distribution). KU 5000 was further combined to other freight trains to transport cars to various regions. KU 5000 debuted first solely in red color, changed then into two-tone colors of blue and red and finally into tricolor of blue, white and red, which is also the corporate color of Nissan.

KU 5000 is a car carrier which appeared in 1966 to standardize transport of cars when the amount of cars produced in Japan was steadily increasing. It became a star of JR freight transport immediately. In the heyday, the dedicated limited express “Arrow” was put in operation across Japan in the maximum of 20 car consist.

Kato will refine details such as handrails and remake the model, using a new molds of this 6 car-carrier set # 8078.

The automobiles to load will be molded in such a form as covered with protection sheet and these will be also sold as a separate accessory item #23-510A.
KU 5000 can be coupled, to each other, to make a dedicated car-carrier train or connected to another normal freight train to make a mixed freight car train.
