Walthers Mainline

The EMD GP9 was introduced in 1954 as an upgraded GP7. Initially, the GP9’s were virtually unchanged externally from the GP7’s. As production continued, GP9’s would include different louver arrangements, eventually losing frame skirting. As the EMD GP9 was basically an upgraded GP7, all of the fuel tank, steam generator, and dynamic brake options from GP7’s were available. Between 1954 & 1963, more than 4000 of these locomotives were built for railroads in the United States & Canada with a handful more built for other railroads elsewhere. The Phase II version of this locomotive featured the chopped nose short hood that would become the standard cab configuration of almost all diesel locomotives in North America for decades to come. Today, many examples of these locomotives remain in service with various rebuild programs ensuring they will be around for years to come.

PLEASE NOTE: When operating Walthers-branded DCC-equipped locomotives in DC mode, do not use power packs that exceed an 18V rating. This includes MRC 1300-series power packs which have known issues with our decoders.

WalthersMainline Phase II High-Hood GP9 is a must-have model for your first-generation diesel roster!
