PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

In September of 2014, Norfolk Southern purchased 100 ex-Union Pacific SD90MAC locomotives from EMD/Progress Rail to assist in the high volume traffic that NS was experiencing. As AC traction was being more accepted by the railroad, which previously had relied solely on DC power, the 90MACs fit the new direction of motive power for the railroad.

Starting in 2016, NS began the SD70ACU capital rebuild program using the SD90MAC units as cores. All major components were either overhauled or replaced, including an overhaul of the 710G3C prime mover. Most notable in the rebuild is that from

the electrical cabinet forward, all new components were used, including a new ACe style isolated cab with AAR-style control stand. The new electrical cabinet contains Mitsubishi electronics, replacing the 90MAC’s original Siemens equipment.

Later, starting in 2018, Canadian Pacific announced a plan to acquire 30 SD70ACU units from EMD/Progress Rail using their laid up fleet of SD90MAC locomotives as core units. That number was later increased from 30 to 60. They also acquired 2 ex-Union Pacific units, in 2019.

In September of 2019, CP unveiled two Heritage painted locomotives in the Tuscan and Grey paint schemes; one unit, 7010, using the Canadian Pacific script lettering and the other
unit, 7015, utilizing the Roman font. CP has painted 10 units in this scheme, 5 with the script style lettering and 5 with the Roman style
lettering.

In November of 2019, CP painted 5 SD70ACU’s into 5 separate military inspired paint schemes. These units commemorate the Army, Navy, Air Force and a special tribute locomotive for D-Day wearing camo and the Allied invasion stripes used on June 6, 1944.

All Canadian Pacific units have been completed in 2020 and can been found plying the rails of Canada and the US, with a few having even reached Mexico!

On November 15th 2019, We published a media page regarding the new Canadian Pacific Special Locomotives to Honor US and Canadian Military SD70 Acu's.

We didn't send out emails to all of our customers, or officially announce this project on our website we wanted to see how many would place reservations on the locomotives without an e mail, we were very happy with the huge response we got.

We talked to a quality manufacturer about making these locomotives, they are going to do them, at this time we can not release any specific information nor reveal who the manufacturer is. So please do not call us asking who it is.

So we are not saying that the North American Railcar Corporation is going to manufacture the locomotives, and we can't tell you who is, it's still hush hush. This is why there is no pricing associated with the locomotives at this time. So don’t call us and ask who is manufacturing them, or what the price is, we will not be allowed to tell you until the time is right, so please be patient.

We are now officially announcing Special Locomotives to honor US and Canadian Military reservations to our customers.

Check out the history about the SD70ACu's below.

The EMD SD70ACU is a 6-axle 4,300 hp (3,200 kW) road switcher diesel-electric locomotive originally built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division as an SD90MAC, and rebuilt by the Norfolk Southern Railway and Progress Rail Services. They are operated by two railroads, Norfolk Southern and the Canadian Pacific Railway.

The SD70ACU began under Norfolk Southern, who rebuilt their SD90MACs to this configuration at its shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The first locomotive entered the rebuilding process in September 2015, which was number 7299. As of 2019, all 110 units have been released into active service.

All of the SD70ACUs will be rebuilt with the latest EMD cab which meets current FRA crashworthiness standards. The Siemens electronics will be replaced with Mitsubishi electronics. The rebuild also includes the installation of Ultra Cab II, locomotive speed limiter (LSL), and cab signals. The trucks will be rebuilt only as needed and they are not getting traction motors swapped out.

In 2018, Canadian Pacific started a similar rebuild program with their long dormant SD90MAC fleet. Unlike NS, the work on these rebuilds will not be done in-house, but by Progress Rail at their Mayfield, Kentucky and Muncie, Indiana facilities.

Canadian Pacific

In 2018, it was announced that the Canadian Pacific Railway came to an agreement with Progress Rail Services to rebuild 30 of Canadian Pacific's long dormant SD90MAC fleet into a similar rebuild as what Norfolk Southern had done. The new Canadian Pacific SD70ACUs are numbered 7000–7029. In 2019, CP decided to rebuild their remaining 28 SD90MACs. It had originally purchased 61 SD90MACs, but since they had been in long term storage since 2012, three units were unfit for rebuilding. To make up for the loss, CP purchased two SD90MACs from Union Pacific for another batch of 30 rebuilds, these are to be numbered 7030–7059. The second batch of SD70ACUs started to arrive in February 2020.

The Canadian Pacific units will feature crew comforts and safety features such as the Progress Rail “Q cab," featuring an AAR control stand, an emergency access door located behind the conductor’s seat, forward and inward facing cameras, an electrically assisted hand brake, and full-length window awnings. Also included are new control electronics, Mitsubishi AC propulsion components, NYAB CCBII electronic air brakes, and positive train control. These units are also equipped with Progress Rail’s EM2000 Control System and FIRE display screens. Each rebuild will weigh 432,000 lbs., have a maximum speed of 65MPH, and be rated at 4500 horsepower. These units will meet Tier 1+ emission standards.

In August 2019, Canadian Pacific received the first four SD70ACUs and subsequently assigned them to coal train service in British Columbia for testing.

On September 16, 2019, Progress Rail rolled out two SD70ACU rebuilds in Canadian Pacific heritage paint schemes, and it was announced that there were to be ten units in total. CP 7010 to 7014 would be painted in the Tuscan red and grey paint scheme with script writing that was used between 1960 and 1968. Units numbered from 7015 to 7019 wear a similar paint scheme with block lettering that was used between 1949 and 1959.

On November 11, 2019, five units with commemorative military themes were released during Canadian Pacific's Remembrance Day Ceremony. These units are numbered 7020–7023, with 7024 being renumbered to 6644 (for the date 6/6/44) in honor of D-Day. 6644 represents a memorial to World War II, the paint scheme derived from the Allied Spitfire using Royal Air Force Dark Green, Ocean Grey, and accented with Roundel Yellow with a font that is RAF standard to planes used in WWII. It also distinctively sports invasion stripes on the rear hood similar to those applied to Allied aircraft prior to the D-Day landings. 7020 represents the Army in Temperate Regions. It is painted NATO Green and features a modernized Army font. 7021 represents the Army in Arid Regions and is painted in a Desert Sand Color and features a modernized Army font like 7020. 7022 represents the Navy, and is painted Royal Canadian Navy Shipside Grey and Oxide Red and uses the correct naval font. 7023 represents the Air Force, and is painted in the same colors as a CF-18 which uses Light Ghost Grey and Medium Grey as well featuring the correct RCAF font. All five commemorative military units feature Canadian Pacific's unique Support Our Troops logo, as well a Canadian and American flag on opposite sides of the locomotive.

CP 7030 has a Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment shield applied on the nose, like CP 8939, a GE ES44AC.

We thought you would enjoy learning about why
Canadian Pacific decided  to unveil the commemorative  locomotives.

For those of you who have not heard, Canadian Pacific has been rebuilding their SD90Mac's into new units designated as SD70Acu's (essentially an SD90 chassis with a SD70Ace body).

Canadian Pacific has recently painted units in CP Red and White modern scheme. They have also painted a few units in the traditional Maroon & Gray Scheme with Block and Script lettering.

We want you to know Candian Pacific has just painted 5 new locomotives in Canadian and American Military themed paint and graphics.

2 years ago I had dinner with someone from the CP management team and we talked about the UP Heritage Units. I said "wouldn't it be great if Canadian Pacific did something similar"?  Sometimes it pays to put a little bug in the right persons ear!

Here is the offical release from Canadian Pacific

Canadian Pacific (CP) unveiled five specially painted locomotives on Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans Day in the U.S. honouring the culture and history of the armed forces. The five Electro-Motive Diesel SD70ACUs will take the message of military pride across the CP system.

"As a leading employer of veterans, CP is proud to commemorate military machines and the brave men and women who've operated them in conflicts around the world," said CP President, CEO and veteran Keith Creel. "As these locomotives pass through communities across the CP system, I hope those who see them will reflect on the sacrifices made by so many of their countrymen to protect and defend their freedom."

CP personnel carefully studied the paint colours and patterns that branches of the Canadian and U.S. militaries applied to tanks, planes and warships. Based on their research, they devised five liveries for these locomotives:

* CP 7020 wears North Atlantic Treaty Organization green, which the Canadian and U.S. armies apply to fighting vehicles and equipment serving in temperate climates.

* CP 7021 wears the sand colour that the Canadian and U.S. armies apply to fighting vehicles and equipment serving in arid climates.

* CP 7022 wears the grey, red and black colour pattern of modern Canadian and American warships.

* CP 7023 wears a two-tone gray paint scheme designed after the livery applied to Canadian and American fighter jets.

* CP 6644 wears the camouflage colours applied to Royal Canadian Air Force "Spitfire" fighter planes flown at the Allied invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944

Four of the five locomotives bear a Canadian flag on one side and American on the other. CP operates in both countries and employs veterans of both countries' military services.

All locomotives in a line

"We are proud to support our veterans and the invaluable skill and experience that they have gained serving their country," said CP Senior Vice-President Engineering, Mechanical and Procurement Scott MacDonald, a veteran. "These locomotives are a symbol of our support. They will operate in regular service and further support our commitment as a proud employer of veterans in Canada and the United States."

"It's hard to quantify how much impact
you're going to have — just showing
somebody that we remember you.
And this is going to be going for years."
- Travis McLean

CP was recently awarded a Gold Top 10 Military Friendly® Employer designation by Viqtory Media. In October, CP joined Homes for Heroes and other stakeholders for the grand opening of the ATCO Veterans Village in Calgary, a community of tiny homes aimed at getting homeless veterans off the street. Through its Spin for a Veteran program, CP has helped raise more than $800,000 for the cause.

For those of you who have not seen the Canadian Pacific Heritage Units here is an image from Canadian Pacific.

Canadian Pacific Heritage Units

Canadian Pacific will be painting 10 of its newly rebuilt SD70ACU locomotives into its historic tuscan red, gray, and gold paint scheme.

On Monday morning, CP shared an image on social media of the two freshly painted locomotives, Nos. 7010 and 7015, with the message, “We take pride in our past and look to the future with the same boldness, ambition and innovation that drove the creation of the railway."

In an exclusive interview with Trains News Wire, Baden Tidd, assistant vice president of mechanical, says the railroad plans on painting a total of 10 heritage units. Locomotives Nos. 7010 to 7014 will wear CP’s original tuscan red, gray, and gold paint scheme with tuscan red script lettering along the long hood. Locomotives Nos. 7015 to 7019 will feature block lettering along the long hood.

The locomotives are part of an order for 60 SD70ACUs using the railroad’s stored SD9043MACs. The locomotives are being rebuilt by Progress Rail in Kentucky. The first four SD70ACUs, Nos. 7000-7003, were recently put in service in British Columbia.

Locomotives Nos. 7010 and 7015 are in Kentucky and Tidd expects them to be shipped to Canada within a week.

Tidd says the idea to paint heritage units was hatched earlier this year. The mechanical department worked with CP’s heritage department, which maintains the railroad’s historic fleet of passenger cars and locomotives, to come up with a number of options to present to CEO Keith Creel. In a nod to the railroad’s historic beaver logo that came back in 2017, Creel selected the tuscan red schemes.

The heritage units are expected to be assigned to service primarily in western Canada. Tidd says they will be put into regular service just like any other locomotive.

“These are wonderful looking locomotives but they’re meant for revenue service,” he says.

The other eight heritage locomotives will painted before the end of the year.

This is not the first time CP has painted a freight locomotive into its historic tuscan red scheme. In the early 2000s, it painted GP38-2 No. 3084 into the classic tuscan scheme. The railroad’s FP9s used for its business train and other excursions also wear the classic livery.

And just to be complete, here is the modern paint scheme the balance of the units are painted
