Pullman-Standard PS-2CD 4750 Covered Hopper

Think of the PS-2CD 4750 (“PS4750″) prototype as the EMD SD40-2 of covered hoppers. Similar to the SD40-2, Pullman-Standard (“PS”) began production of the 4750 covered hopper in 1972 and was the most popular seller within its peer group with more than 56,000 cars produced (not including thousands of clones from other builders and railroads). The 4750 followed upon the successful “high hip” design of one of Pullman’s earlier designs, the 4740 covered hopper, also offered by Tangent Scale Models. When Pullman ceased production of 4750s in 1981, the amassed fleet was the largest single body covered hopper fleet from any of builder, and was arguably the most prolific productions of a singular design during any era. In other words, they were super common! It was rare to find a manifest train without a PS4750 in it. Today, that feat is harder but it is still pretty true.

PS4750s were built to last. It is hard to tally how many ply the rails of North America today, but it is clear a large percentage of the fleet is still in service, working for their original or perhaps new owners. Two original paint scheme railroad-ordered cars are shown here.

Santa Fe ordered four groups of PS4750s for a total of 1700 cars. Here is the Class Ga-191 delivered April 1975, from the 315200-315399 build series.

MNS ordered two lots of PS4750s, and both were delivered in the classy dark blue scheme with red diamond logo and large “MNS” lettering on the side of the car.  The red diamond logo bearing the words “Minneapolis Northfield and Southern Railway” has a white, diamond shape border around it.

While approximately 52% of PS4750s were built for railroads, many of them were built for private operators and grain shippers – with transportation of grains being the primary goal (with some exceptions of course). PTLX “Far-Mar” was part of a substantial order of 300 cars leased to Far-Mar Co., an association of several regional grain cooperatives. These memorable orange and black scheme features a “FAR-MAR” placard centered on the car side, along with extensive stenciling. These cars had Morton running boards, Early Miner outlet gates, Truck mounted brakes, and that classic yellow-painted brake wheel. These cars went everywhere!

Some of the Far-Mar cars were sold to other owners in the latter part of their service lives. KCS acquired one, pictured here.

Additionally, Kyle bought random PTLX cars on the second-hand market for loading on the former Rock Island in Kansas and Eastern Colorado.

Here is another example car built for one of the larger grain purchasers and marketers, Ralston-Jefferson. Ralston-Jefferson was part of a multiple-town cooperative located on the CNW mainline in Iowa that was a gigantic operation and operated a large self-owned fleet of PS4750 grain hoppers. These cars became nationwide roamers in 1987.

Later in their service life they were sold to a large private fleet, and stenciled for fleet-lessor AEX.

Service for these cars was widespread for sure. Which translates to our layouts, both present and future. The most current release of PS4750s focuses on the 1974-1975 production.

Like previous offerings, the PS4750 model from Tangent Scale Models is a state of the art, dimensionally-accurate scale replica with highly accurate “true-to-life” colors and precise letter stencils. Our PS4750 offers our most ambitious effort yet to include a multitude of detail variations to replicate the different phases of production and customer specifications. Example variations include: body shells with or without holes in the side posts, brake systems, outlet gates, roofs, roof hatches, roof overhangs, running boards, crossover platforms, end ladders, jacking pads, brakewheel housings, and brakewheels. This replica includes our fine “near-scale” draft gear box with beautifully-rendered side “key” detail. Our ready-to-operate replica is finished with coupler lift bars accompanying Kadee scale couplers and sufficient hidden weights to ensure the model operates as good as it looks.

Here is a shot of our newest car offering, which represents models from Michigan Elevator Exchange’s second PTLX order, 50 cars produced in October 1973. Michigan Elevator, a division of Farm Bureau Services, Inc., leased 50 cars from Pullman, painted yellow and black with a very sharp-looking red and brown placard that includes a drawing of the state of Michigan! These cars feature unpainted Morton running boards, truck-mounted brake hardware and Timken rotating truck caps, just like the prototype. We are offering these cars today with 6 all-new road numbers! Don’t miss out!

Here is a shot of our new PTLX Cooper Grain car, which is yet another classic scheme applied to a Pullman-built 4750. Cooper Grain leased 5 cars from Pullman-Standard in 1974, painted yellow with sharp red and black graphics. These cars feature Morton running boards, body-mounted brake hardware and Timken rotating truck caps, just like the prototype.

As always, Tangent’s excellent paint and lettering is featured front and center:
