Originally built as a Union Pacific 800-class steam tender in 1937, UPP 809 (814) has undergone significant changes over the years. It was rebuilt as a fuel tender for the GTEL 8500 Horsepower “Big Blow” Turbines in the 1960s, converted to a fuel storage tank in the 1970s, and finally entered water service for the Heritage steam fleet in 1989.
UPP 809 “Jim Adams” with American flag (814 “Joe Jordan”) has been extensively modified since its Turbine Fuel Tender career. It was rebuilt in August 2008 (July 2006). Changes included removing the fuel oil heaters and squaring-off the top corners to increase their water carrying capacity. UPP 809 (814) operates with Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 and Challenger #3985 and will be pulled by Big Boy #4014 in 2019.
