As railroads underwent major changes in the second half of the 20th century, a movement was started by enthusiasts to preserve fast disappearing steam locomotives, antiquated rolling stock, and historically significant routes from possible abandonment. The Open-Sided Excursion Car was developed specifically for these railroads.
