Starting as far back as the late 1920’s railroads began to “piggyback” over-the-road truck trailers on general service flatcars for customers. General Service flatcars were equipped with a combination of rub rails, jack connections, integral or detachable bridge plates, and “5th wheel” mounts, and could carry either pairs of short trail­ers or a single 40’ trailer. The Atlas 50’ Flatcar with Trailers is typical of the general service flatcar conversions that ran from the 1940s through the 1970s.
