The 8,000 Gallon Tank Car was one of the most common and versatile riveted design tank cars of the steam and transition era. More than 1,800 of these "Type 27" style tank cars were produced carrying many bulk liquid commodities including acids, alcohol, ammonia, molasses, petroleum, propane, and vegetable oil. As the fleet began to age, a number of these cars were rebuilt into water cars for Maintenance of Way service into the early 1980s.
