The Alaska Railroad was built in 1904 as a small private line. When its owners, The Alaska Central Railway, and then Alaska Northern Railway went bankrupt, it was purchased by the Federal Government. The Congress funded route was constructed from 1915-1923 and in 1985 it sold the Alaska Railroad back to the state of Alaska, who remains the owner.
