Some model railroads are so believable it's easy to become immersed in what could be. Allen McClelland's approach of the layout operation extending "beyond the basement" was revolutionary for the time. It paved the way for modelers to envision the V&O as a part of a larger network of railroads and possibly interchanging with their layout too. The decades progressed, the motive power transitioned through steam into diesel and eventually into the 2nd generation diesel era, with the V&O becoming part of the Appalachian Lines.
Paying tribute to Allen McClelland and his legacy, InterMountain is offering an ET44AC Tier 4 GEVO heritage unit. This locomotive, numbered #1934, is Allen's birth year and represents a 1960's era first generation diesel for the V&O complete with original "coon-skin" logo.
The Appalachian Lines, being part of the national railroad system, would most likely also pool power across the system with Tony Koester's Allegheny Midland and Steve King's Virginia Midland Considering modern railroad trends with pool and lease power, it is entirely possible that V&O locomotives would be seen running through on a coal train or as a leased DPU on your layout.
