EMD’s E8 and E9 were the quintessential North American passenger locomotives of the 1950s through the 1970s. Many of these units pulled long distance and intercity passenger trains from coast to coast. Towards the end of their careers, many would operate in commuter services. The Chicagoland area saw the most E8A and E9As in commuter services on roads such as the Chicago & North Western, Milwaukee Road and Rock Island. The latter two roads also used Budd Gallery cars, which Rapido Trains Inc. are also offering!
Conrail’s first “official” office car special locomotive was an ex-Erie Lackawanna E8A, number 4022. This received an all-blue dip paint with can opener logos, the only E-Unit on Conrail’s roster to receive them. The Susquehanna would purchase two ex-BN E9Ams for usage on their executive trains. It was also common to see one or both of these E-Units pressed into freight service as required. The perks of a gritty regional freight railroad! Rapido Trains Inc. E-Units will feature all of these neat variations and more.
