Item Introduction

The Oha 35 and SuHa 43 series formed the backbone of JNR-era passenger coach operations. Introduced in 1938, the Oha 35 featured a folded-end body with a rounded roof, wide one-meter passenger windows, TR23 bogies, and a welded construction. Although production halted in 1942, postwar manufacturing resumed with distinctive variants shaped by material shortages and evolving building techniques. The SuHa 43 series, produced in parallel over many years, generated numerous variations through differing paint schemes and modification programs.

From express services to everyday local trains, their widespread use and long service life make them iconic symbols of Japan’s classic passenger rail era.
