From the Amherst Railway Society 2026 Railroad Hobby Show in West Springfield, MA: In 2007, Tangent Scale Models started the trend of offering unparalleled railroad freight car replicas in HO scale, the likes of which had never been seen in the market. These highly-detailed replicas have consistently raised the bar for HO scale models with several hallmarks, including precision tooling, hyper-accurate stenciling, true to life colors, and era-specific details. Fast forward to today’s release: Tangent Scale Models NINTH “Tangent quality” HO scale caboose offering. The era of “one size fits all” cabooses in HO scale plastic is over. Tangent Scale Models bring their passion and knowledge for translating real 1:1 railroad equipment from freight cars to cabooses. Tangent Scale Models execute caboose products at a level that significantly surpasses brass models.

 

Tangent Scale Models ninth caboose model is the HO Scale Erie Railroad International Car Corporation Bay Window Caboose System. This Tangent system covers ERIE’s 1953 order of ICC riveted bay window cabooses. These 50 bay window cabooses served through decades of change, from the ERIE and EL to CR and D&H, through the 1980s and even today. These ERIE cabooses were built by International Car Corporation (ICC) in Kenton, Ohio. ICC was on the ERIE mainline, so it is appropriate that Erie was amongst the first railroads to purchase International cabooses! These Bay Window caboose are easily recognizable with riveted body construction, an overhanging Stanray diagonal-panel roof edge, large windows, a “wagon wheel” roof antenna and bright “Safety Red” paint. This Tangent caboose marks the first “high-detail” RTR ERIE Railroad caboose replica in HO scale, and is being released today.

By 1953, the Erie Railroad served 6 states, with over 2,300 miles of track. ERIE certainly lived up to one of its slogans: “Serving the Heart of Industrial America” with rails from New York to Chicago. The Erie Railroad had previously relied on its Dunmore, Pennsylvania shops to build its steel caboose fleet, with both riveted and welded versions of cupola cabooses between 1941 and 1946. By 1952, ERIE wanted a bay window style caboose. Even though the Dunmore Shops would build one prototype sample, ERIE pivoted the design and production to online customer International Car Corporation. Kenton, Ohio-based ICC used its design, engineering and construction knowledge to create these 50 modern, streamlined, all-steel bay window caboose cars. ERIE was the first Class One Railroad to receive this new style of “bay window” caboose from ICC.

 

The Erie Railroad’s 50 new cabooses were delivered in stunning safety red paint with black roofs and underframe. They were modern rolling offices complete with amenities like electricity, lights, radio communication, bunks, a conductor desk, seating and an electrical generator. Make no mistake about it – the new ERIE cabooses were destined for their mainline trains. These new cabooses featured ICC’s riveted construction, roof-top walkways and rode on repurposed General Steel Casting Corporation “Express” trucks. With the underframe showing off a low-mounted generator, battery box and 6 foot axle spacing on the trucks, these mainline cabooses have a distinctive look on the Erie, a.k.a. “The Heavy Duty Railroad.”

 

Tangent Scale Models Erie Railroad International Car Corporation Bay Window Caboose System covers the details, bodies and nuances of the 1953 through 1980s caboose eras on these railroads:
ERIE 301-350 (1953-1960)
…to EL 301-350 (1960-1976)
…to CR 21100-21146 (1976-1988+)
…to D&H 35805-35807 (1976-1984)

As with many cabooses, the paint schemes that these cabooses wore changed over time: With the ERIE-DL&W merger in 1960, a new version of the safety red/lightning bolt paint scheme evolved with the new Erie Lackawanna corporate name.

 

Various solid EL red paint variations started in 1962. New sliding window screens and frames and side body-mounted marker lights were added by the EL in 1971, completely changing the look of the caboose body. EL’s sharp gray and maroon repaints started showing up in 1973.

 

Early Conrail versions retained their Erie Lackawanna appearance, notably retaining their running boards and trucks.

 

By late 1976 however, Conrail began their own modernization program to remove the roof walkways and apply their standard end railings and lighting modifications.

 

Three of these cabooses also ended up on the D&H!

 

Today, there are several of these cabooses in various museums and display uses. And yes, two of the CR-modified examples are still running on today’s Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad in attractive red paint! 70+ years of changes translates to quite a ride for these ERIE warriors.

It’s difficult to understate the importance of these ERIE ICC Bay Window cabooses. They were the newest and most modern ERIE road caboose when they debuted in 1953, continued their mainline role through the EL and had long service lives through Conrail. This era is an incredible period of change for railroads like the ERIE, EL and CR, and it is easy to see why Tangent has planted its ERIE caboose flag here. And let’s face it, Tangent Scale Models love to count RIVETS!

These “no fuss” track-powered interior and exterior lights are compatible with DC or DCC setups right out of the box (a simple wand included in the box activates the lights). In order to bring you this project with the level of research required for prototype perfection, Tangent Scale Models needed to measure and photograph two examples of these cabooses! Tangent Scale Models would like to give a big “thank you” to:

– The Railroad Museum of the Niagara Frontier in North Tonawanda, NY, for allowing us to spend an entire day measuring ERIE C348, a veteran of ERIE, EL and D&H use. C348 maintained its window treatments, and most importantly, is still sitting atop those gorgeous General Steel Casting Express trucks. Tangent Scale Models had beautiful weather to measure and reverse engineer this caboose in a thorough manner, way back during pandemic times.

– Derry Station Railroad Heritage Park in Derry, PA, for maintaining the beautiful blue CR 21143. This caboose is a snapshot of the early Conrail-era 1976 modifications for end railings and roof details for the ex-ERIE C324. The hardest part of this measurement exercise was the distraction of the busy NS (former PRR/PC/Conrail) Pittsburgh-Harrisburg main just 100 feet away. Sometimes, you must pause and watch trains go by!

– Conrail N7D “Blue Repaint 6-1976” w/ Interior Lights and Lit Marker Light Boxes replicates the early Conrail repaints. These feature the full-length CR logo along the body and high CONRAIL roadname in the top right corner. CR fans will immediately recognize the paint shop – these cabooses were repainted by the former EL Meadville, PA Shop (that’s the MDV 6-76 down on the sill!). Meadville had its own distinctive way of painting and stenciling railcars and cabooses, and they did not disappoint with these early Conrail repaints. Notice the end body stripes, reminding everyone of the cabooses’ EL heritage. The roof walkway was maintained on 1976 blue CR repaints. But other features like the smoke jacks and antenna configurations are photo matched to each number. The same goes for the underframe – the underbody details like the toolbox and generator style change depending on the car number. Yes, Tangent Scale Models are working from individual car photos!  The lit side marker light boxes are painted white to match the prototypes. These CR repaints have a chemical toilet installed, so that translates to no visible dump pipe on the underframe. The ends feature an accurate power brake wheel, separately applied coupler cut levers and train line air hoses. The model rides in Tangent’s All-New General Steel Casting “Express” trucks with 33″ standard .110” tread CNC wheels. The caboose has a fully-painted light gray interior. For lighting, this Tangent CR repaint is equipped with “golden” interior lights, mimicking the incandescent bulbs of the real cabooses along with lit body side mount red/green marker light boxes. A wand is included to operate the lights – easy with no fuss! Tangent Scale Models are offering their CR “Blue Repaint 6-1976” scheme in 3 numbers. Note that while all three cabooses were repainted in June of 1976, each individual car number is photo-matched.
