The legendary E8 and E9 locomotives represent the grand finale of the iconic “E-Unit” passenger diesel series built by Electro-Motive Division in La Grange, Illinois. Following the tremendous success of the E7, these streamlined beauties quickly became favorites among major railroads across North America.

Performance & Legacy

The E8 delivered a powerful 2,250 horsepower from twin 12-cylinder 567B engines, making it a dependable leader for premier passenger trains from coast to coast. Between 1949 and 1954, nearly 500 E8 A and B units were produced for service in the United States and Canada.

Building on that success, the E9 raised the bar even higher with 2,400 horsepower and subtle refinements in design. From the 1950s through the late 1970s, E9s hauled some of America’s most famous trains, including the Union Pacific Railroad “City” fleet, the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad “Zephyr” fleet, and the Southern Pacific Railroad Coast Daylight and Sunset Limited. Their sleek styling and reliable performance made them true icons of first-class rail travel.

Today, many E8s and E9s have been preserved, and several remain operational at museums and tourist railroads. Union Pacific even maintains a fleet of three E9s for special excursions and executive service—proof of the lasting legacy of these remarkable locomotives.
