● Item Introduction

The Keio Teito Railway 5000 Series was introduced in 1963 as an 18-meter-class commuter EMU featuring three doors per side and longitudinal seating. It was developed to enhance the image of Keio Teito Railway (present-day Keio Corporation) in conjunction with the relocation of Shinjuku Station underground and the increase of the Keio Line’s operating voltage to 1,500 V.
The 5000 Series was assigned to the newly introduced Limited Express services and received the prestigious Laurel Prize the following year. Beginning with cars built in 1968, newly manufactured vehicles were equipped with air conditioning. Earlier cars were subsequently retrofitted as well, with the series playing an important role in expanding the use of air conditioning across the Keio fleet. A total of 155 cars were built by 1969.

Another distinctive feature of the series was the wide variety of bogies and air-conditioning unit covers, which differed depending on the year of manufacture and the timing of air-conditioning modifications.

KATO is pleased to introduce the first-generation Keio Teito Railway 5000 Series, marking the first Keio train to join KATO’s private railway rolling stock lineup. The lineup includes the 5000 Series and 5100 Series with retrofitted air conditioning, as well as a Special Edition 7-Car Set featuring the popular later-production air-conditioned cars equipped with small distributed air-conditioning units.
