Original stock # 489-20240-run11

This 40' box car with single Superior door is painted vermilion & gray with white & black NYC Oval logo and large "Pacemaker" lettering. NYC 174728 runs on black Bettendorf trucks. Not intended for interchange service, stenciling on this series of cars did not include capacity or dimensional data. The distinctive paint job was also innovative, in that it dried twice as fast as others. The paint was a fast-drying formula developed by Sherwin-Williams Company called "Flash-Dri". In 1949, after these cars were in service for some time, it was discovered that the white lettering on the gray portion of the car sides became difficult to read. To correct this problem, black stenciling was used. The herald with white lettering on a black background began being used in 1955.
