Penn Central was born in 1968 with the merger of Pennsylvania and New York Central. The following year they acquired the New Haven. Combining these giants was troublesome to say the least and in 1970 PC declared bankruptcy. This event triggered massive changes in the railroad industry. Amtrak was created, the seeds were sown for deregulation, and states were made responsible for the crippling losses of commuter operations. The trials of Penn Central brought needed attention to a struggling industry which in turn probably saved it. Penn Central inherited this type of car from both New York Central and Pennsylvania. As the cars were shopped and repainted for PC, their roof walks were removed in accordance with the FRA rule change from 1964. At the time of repainting, these cars also received ACI bar codes and "con-stencils" (also called FRA lube plates) which are the black and white data boxes below and to the right of the PC "mating worms" logos. Horizontal and vertical orientation of the con-stencils were used interchangeably so we have included both versions spread across the six road numbers of this release (notice the car in the background.) This class also received the stencilized version of the "PENN CENTRAL" lettering. These cars are equipped with Micro-Trains Line trucks and couplers.
