Among all of the Chessie System GP40-2?s ordered, one stood out from the rest, that unit was Chessie System GM50. This unit was part of Chessie?s first order of GP40-2?s and was painted gold to celebrate General Motors? 50th anniversary of being in the locomotive business. GM50 was used widely around Chessie System?s lines; it was most notably used in company excursions. However, when not in service pulling such excursions, GM50 could be found anywhere, pulling anything. During GM50?s lifespan, it received a couple of paint jobs to keep its gold coat fresh. Although, one may note that size and placement of the lettering on the cab with each paint job was never identical to the previous paint job. Finally, in August of 1984, GM50?s gold coat was replaced by Chessie?s famous blue, yellow, and vermilion paint and renumbered #4164
