Transporting over the road trailers and wagons by rail has had a long history that stretches back to the late nineteenth century. Following the Second World War TOFC business began to come into it's own as the railroads worked to compete with the over the road truckers. These efforts took the form of converting standard flaty cars to accept the then standard 25-foot trailer.
