TRAILER-FLATCAR SERVICE The Pacific Motor Trucking Company (PMT) was founded by the Southern Pacific RR in 1928 with the intention of expanding its RR business. SP provided pick-up and delivery (PUD) services both to and from local highway trucking firms or freight stations in order to accomplish this result. 1953 was the year Southern Pacific began trailer-on-flat-car (TOFC) service and when combined with PUD operations the SP could provide door to door trucking over vast distances. The Southern Pacific PMT subsidiary provided a much needed route of travel for almost every manufactured product imaginable within the "Golden Empire" area. Whether it be watermelons, kitchen appliances, car parts or food products, you name it, and it probably traveled over the SP rails.
