● After its retirement, D51 498 was stored in a static state, but it returned to the main line in 1988 when it was towed by the Orient Express '88, which was visiting Japan at the time. Since then, it has gained popularity by pulling event trains such as the "SL Minakami" on the Joetsu Line, and has become one of the signature trains of JR East.
In 2015, an LP405-typeequipped auxiliary light light. Currently, it is mainly used for "SL Gunma Minakami" and "SL Gunma Yokogawa", pulling Series 12 passenger cars.

Series 12 Passenger Car JR East Takasaki Yard 7-Car Passenger Set
● Series 12 Passenger Cars are used in such special trains as “Steam Locomotive train Gumma, “Minakami” or “Steam locomotive train Gumma, Yokokawa”, drawn by D51 and other steam locomotives, as well as in special trains on other lines in JR East Japan’s areas.
OYA 12’s are special cars modified on the basis of SUHAFU 12 belonging to the Takasaki Train Depot and used as reserve cars to accompany and move a steam locomotive, move in or out of factories or to travel to a distant area to make a special train.
◆ To pull the trains, such locomotives are recommendable as EF64 1000s of JR East Japan, #2016-A D51 (with Sublights) and #7008-G DD51 800 belonging to Takasaki Train Depot.
Series 787 Tsubame 9-Car Passenger Set
● The real train appeared as a limited express “Tsubame” in July, 1992. Ever since it experienced various operations and renewal of the interiors and exteriors. It is still now operated as a main train of the JR Kyushu conventional limited express. Upon its debut, it was deployed first to Kagoshima Operation Center and travelled between Moji port, Hakata and Nishikagoshima (the current Kagoshima Chuo). In 1994, the train was altered to consist of 9 cars with the buffet car SAHASHI 787 changed from car No. 3 to 5.
