HO DASH 8-40C & 8-40CW Locomotives
New Road Numbers & Paint Schemes!
(Technical artwork shown)
First built for Union Pacific in the late 1980's
by General Electric, the DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives were
identified by an enlarged exhaust stack and the mounting of the
dynamic brake grids in a square-like unit behind the cab, which
housed an enlarged equipment blower fan. These six-axle, 4,000 hp
engines are still in service today in North America.
The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General
Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful
Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this
model was the introduction of GE?s version of the wide-nose ?North
American Safety Cab.? This style of cab would become a common sight
on railroads across the country. Four major railroads purchased the
Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX,
Santa Fe and Union Pacific. Most of these units are still in
regular mainline and heavy-haul freight service today. Due to
various mergers, they can also be seen operating for new owners
Norfolk Southern and BNSF.
Features Include:
-Ditch lights (8-40CW only)
-Number boards, sand fill hatch, and marker lights where
appropriate by railroad (8-40CW only)
-Realistic die-cast underframe
-Factory-equipped with AccuMate? knuckle couplers
-Coupler pocket designed to accept AccuMate? Proto-couplers

HO RS-3 & RSD-4/5 Locomotives
New Paint Schemes & Road Numbers!
(N scale model shown)
Well over 1,300 RS-3 road-switcher locomotives
were built by ALCO between 1950 and 1956. It can be considered one
of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever
produced by the builder. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by
an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE
electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive.
It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger
and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments.
Original owners of the RS-3 tended to be in the eastern and central
regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and
southeast).
During this same time-period, ALCO offered a
six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the west.
The RSD-4/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having
six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature. They produced the
same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due
to the use of a larger generator. Many RSD-4/5s were assigned to
operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success)
on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.
Features Include:
-Separately-applied handrails and stanchions, including separate
drop step detail
-Directional lighting
-Factory installed AccuMate? couplers
-Dual flywheel-equipped five-pole skewed armature motor for optimum
performance at all speeds
-Metal grab irons
-Accurate painting and printing

New Road Numbers & Paint Schemes!
(Model from previous run shown)
Pulpwood is not a specific type of wood, but
actually tree limbs that are cut to a specified length, then turned
into wood pulp and used in the paper industry. Early paper making
had the trees near the paper plant. As timber resources were
diminished, the need for transporting pulpwood began to rise.
Railroads were seen as an efficient method of transporting
pulpwood. Pulpwood in the Southeast and Northeast is generally cut
into four-foot or less lengths and loaded onto "V-deck" bulkhead
flat cars. The Atlas pulpwood flat is a reproduction of an early
1950s General Steel Castings "V-deck" design.
Features Include:
-Ready-to run
-Rugged die-cast chassis
-Stirrups
-Plastic deck & bulkheads
-Separate air reservoir
-Brake cylinder
-Triple valve
-Open or closed bulkheads to match the prototype
-Simulated detailed pulpwood load
